    ABSTRACTS DUE APRIL 15TH
    Completed papers due October 15th

    SAMLA Women’s Caucus
    Baltimore, MD -- Nov. 15-17, 2002

Southern Belles to Belle Watling to Jezebel; or, Sex & the Southern
    Girl

The focus will be on representations of female sexuality in southern
literature by women. My main interest is in contemporary literature and
art (print, visual, and/or musical), but I will consider abstracts
addressing any time period. Preference will be given to presentations
that include some autobiographical dimension, connecting personal
experiences with textual and cultural patterns. How do southern women
grapple with sexuality at the intersection of bible belt ideology, media
culture stereotypes, and the seemingly relentless conservative cultural
urge towards regulating female bodies and pleasures?

While I don't want to restrict your interpretation of the panel topic, I
will mention a few authors who spring immediately to mind:

            - Lee Smith
            - Rosemary Daniell
            - Kaye Gibbons
            - Minnie Bruce Pratt
            - Dorothy Allison
            - bell hooks
            - Bebe Campbell
            - Tina McElroy
            - Lalita Tademy

    Or cultural phenomena:

            - Alice Randall (_The Wind Done Gone_)
            - Victor Nunez’s film, _Ruby in Paradise_
            - Why is a major Atlanta magazine called _Jezebel_?

Presenters must be a member of SAMLA by the time of the conference.
Registration and dues combined cost around $90.

Send abstracts to Lisa Johnson at ljohnson@westga.edu (no attachments,
please) or to 123 Rebecca Morris St., Bowdon, GA 30108.
