    CALL FOR PAPERS
liminal spaces, liminal places, liminal traces
14th Annual Tufts University Graduate Conference
    Friday, October 18, 2002

Liminality is the moment where borders are porous, structures disintegrate,
commonplaces collide and stability is subverted by the occult drive of
change. Our conference will address the paradox of liminal spaces: Is
liminality the resistance to "embodiment", or is it complicit in the
integrity of the spaces it borders? Does it resist form altogether -
resisting even physical, material form itself? Is it a purely theoretical,
linguistic phenomenon? Is it particularly that which cannot be spoken? Or,
is it symptomatic of signification itself? Does the liminal space map the
potential site of revolution? Is it inherently counter-cultural? Or, is it a
residual signifier for that which is problematic and chaotic?

Since liminalality is an interdisciplinary location, we encourage abstracts
that explore and problematize the term from a wide range of fields and
interests. Submissions should examine the concept of liminality as it
crosses disciplines and boundaries, advancing provocative investigations of
identity, language, and/or the politics of location. there are many relevant
inquiries to pose and analyze, and we are eager to consider them all.

Paper topics may include, but are not limited to:

    Liminal phases and rites-of-passage
    Constructions/transgressions of identity-codes
