Locked Up, then Locked Out: A Conference on Prisoners' Civil Disabilities

Baldy Center for Law & Social Policy, University at Buffalo Law School, NY
October 18-20, 2002

CALL FOR PAPERS

Legal scholars have long focused on the effects of incarceration on the
scope of prisoners' individual constitutional rights (e.g., the right of
access to courts, free association, free speech). Sponsored by the Baldy
Center for Law & Social Policy, this conference addresses a broader
definition of civil disabilities that includes effects not only on
ex-offenders, but their families, their communities, and even the
constitution of civil society itself. The conference organizers are
especially interested in including researchers from a wide range of
disciplines who may not specialize in the field of criminal justice or
prisoners' rights per se but whose work intersects with and/or may be
informed by the implications of civil disability upon issues of housing,
health, employment, mobility, citizenship, and other aspects of civil
society in the United States and Canada. Some travel and accommodation
expenses will be paid. Please send an abstract by JULY 1, 2002 to
Christopher Mele (cmele@acsu.buffalo.edu) or Teresa Miller
(tmiller@buffalo.edu). Final papers will be due two weeks prior to the
conference. More detailed information and updates can be found at
