CALL FOR PAPERS:
NEMLA
April 6-9, 2003
Boston, Massachusetts
Submission deadline: 9/10/02

Panel Title:
Unrealistic Realism: The Depiction of War in Nineteenth-Century American
Literature

Contact: Beth Jensen
email: bjensen@gpc.peachnet.edu

Panel Abstract:

This panel invites papers using a variety of critical approaches to analyze
the Nineteenth Century's struggle with the Civil War. The Civil War was a
major event in the lives of most nineteenth-century American writers, yet
the literary works, even many written between 1861-1865, often ignore the
atrocities of the time. Some authors neglect the topic all together while
others present a romanticized view of war, yet the subtexts often suggest an
inability to suppress fully the national tension and turmoil. Submissions
using a variety of critical approaches to analyze the text or subtext of
canonical and non-canonical works of nineteenth-century American writers are
welcome.
