CALL FOR PAPERS
SHAKESPEARE AND THE BARBARIANS
Papers are invited for a one-day conference on ‘Shakespeare and the
Barbarians’ to be held at the University of Surrey Roehampton on 26
October 2002. The conference will mark the inauguration of the
University’s Centre for Research in Renaissance Studies. There will be a
keynote lecture by Professor Jonathan Bate entitled ‘The Elizabethans
and the Translation of Empire’. Papers are invited from academic staff
and postgraduate students (there will be one postgraduate-only seminar)
on the following: civilisation versus the barbarian other; Ottoman
perceptions of Christendom; the just war; the heroic ideal; colonialism;
patriarchy; militant Protestantism;
Puritan vandals; racial stereotypes; poetics (drama as a civilising
influence); or related topics.
Proposals (250-300 words) for 20-minute papers should be submitted by 2
September 2002 to Robin Headlam Wells
