Works focusing on borders, language, ethnicity, and the multicultural
Southwest, especially encouraged, including
* Poetry, fiction, or non-fiction essays (20-30 minutes
reading time):
* Critical or biographical essays or panels on Naomi Shihab
Nye or other writers (complete articles or abstracts/proposals
of about 250 words accepted).

About Naomi Shihab Nye:
Naomi Shihab Nye is a poet, essayist, author of children's
literature, and songwriter. Her recent books include Fuel (poems); Habib (a
novel for young readers); Lullaby Raft (a picture book); and Never in a
Hurry (a collection of essays). Winner of four Pushcart Prizes, she is the
author on. The author of five additional collections of poems,
including Hugging the Jukebox, Red Suitcase, and Words Under the Words.
A Guggenheim Fellow for 1997 and 1998, Nye has received two Jane
Addams Children's Book Awards, a Lavan Award from the Academy of American
Poets, numerous citations from the American Library Association and a
Witter Bynner Fellowship (Library of Congress) for 2000. Poetry Editor for
The Texas Observer and columnist for Organica, Naomi Shihab Nye
participated in two PBS documentaries, The Language of Life with Bill
Moyers and The United States of Poetry. She has also been part of Garrison
Keillor's Prairie Home Companion NPR show. Nye currently lives in downtown
San Antonio, a block from the river with her photographer husband Michael
Nye and her teenage son Madison. She has worked widely as a visiting writer
with students of all ages for 26 years since her graduation from Trinity
University.
About the Conference:
The conference invites fiction, poetry, and critical essays on all
aspects of the Southwest and beyond. Particularly welcome are presentations
on the works and influence of Naomi Shihab Nye. The 7th annual conference
honors the distinguished author Elmer Kelton. The first Distinguished
Visiting Professor at Angelo State University and now an adjunct professor
in the ASU English Department, Elmer Kelton is one of the most respected
and honored men of letters in Texas, a recipient of the Distinguished
Achievement Award from the Western Literature Association and the Barbara
McCombs/Lon Tinkle Award from the Texas Institute of Letters.
