Submissions are invited for a session entitled
"Befriending the 'Other' Woman: Exploring Women's
Interracial Relationships in American Literature."
Papers should examine the relationships shared by
women of different races, especially African American
and white women (although papers addressing any other
racial or ethnic categories would also be of
interest). The purpose of this panel will be to
interrogate the ways that women writers imagine the
interaction between women of different races, and
whether their texts confirm the possibility of genuine
friendship across racial lines--or do not. What are
the political implications of such friendships?
