CALL FOR PAPERS

“Bodies in Contact: Women's Writing Before 1900”

American Comparative Literature Association
Cal State San Marcos
San Diego, April 4-6 2003

In keeping with the theme of this year's conference, "Crossing Over," this
seminar will explore different forms of cross-cultural contact in women's
writing before 1900 --moments when "foreign" bodies cross over, collide,
and commingle. It's especially interested in the representation of
physical contact between "cultures" and the question of cross-cultural
immersion, conversion, and/or penetration.

In this context, the word "culture" can signify diverse facets of social
location and identity: class, race, region, disability, gender, ethnicity,
religion, nation, etc. Thus, comparative approaches are encouraged, but one
culture/one language papers are also welcome. Any genre of women's writing
seems ripe for this kind of inquiry, including: captivity narratives,
travel narratives, hospital sketches, letters, poetry, long and short fiction.

Please email 250-word (1 page) abstracts by July 30, 2002 to my home email
