The University of Virginia's College at Wise, Medieval-Renaissance
Conference is pleased to offer the following session:

Arthurian Landscapes: Romance and Chronicle

The session invites papers dealing with treatment of mapping
territory and landscape in Arthurian literature;, including
interdisciplinary approaches to Arthurian material from the
perspective of cartography, art, literature, and historiography.
Recent books on landscape and territory in Malory, Layamon's Brut and
Robert of Gloucester, and in the Arthurian cycles attest to the
scholarly interest in this subject. Topics might include, but would
not be limited to: "romance" and allegorical landscapes; territorial
boundaries and ethnic identity; land as "hero" in Arthurian chronicle
narrative; land and knighthood; transgression of boundaries in
Arthurian literature; place-names in Arthurian narrative, among
others.

and conclusion(s). Please include: Your name, institutional affiliation,
complete mailing address, phone, e-mail, and fax numbers. Title of paper,
confirmation that paper is no more than 20 minutes, an abstract cover sheet
(available in the July International Congress on Medieval Studies Call for
Papers). Any abstracts not accepted for this session will be forwarded to
the Program Committee at the Medieval Institute for possible inclusion in a
General Session.
