Call for Papers
South Central Modern Language Assocation (SCMLA) - 2003
Hot Springs, Arkansas
October 31, 2003-November 1, 2003

Welty and Technology
Chair: Sarah Ford, Baylor University

This panel will examine the various images of technology in Welty's
fiction: from planes, trains, and automobiles to cameras, phones, and
radios. Papers could discuss how these markers of the modern age and a
mass-market economy figure into a body of work rooted in largely rural and
specific places. Potential topics are how aspects of modern
transportation affect the narrative structure of works, or how characters
use and react to modern technology, or how traces of modernity reconfigure
pastoral settings. Papers or abstracts should be sent to
Sarah_Ford@baylor.edu by November 15, 2002.
