PROPOSAL DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NEXT FRIDAY
Society for Cinema Studies Conference: March 6-9, Minneapolis
Workshop: Extra-Cinematic Performances
This workshop aims to facilitate a discussion of how the many players in
international film industries-stars, directors, writers, producers,
etc.-perform off-screen. How have studios legislated the behavior of
their commodities and what happens to celebrity behavior in the absence
of an all-powerful studio system? How have such devices as fan
magazines and celebrity "news" programs changed the stakes of movie
making? How have extra-cinematic performances shaped the industry and
its audience? Are there new directions and methodologies that the study
of such subject matter is/should be going?
Please note: this is a workshop format so there will be no formal papers
presented; rather, informal 10 minute presentations will be followed by
an interactive discussion of extra-cinematic performances and possible
directions for scholarship in this area. International and historical
perspectives are encouraged, as are original and provocative ideas about
the possible directions for such lines of inquiry.
Presenters must be members of the Society for Cinema Studies (or must
join by date of final submission; visit the Society's webpage at
www.cinemastudies.org for more details). Please email (preferably) or
mail 300-400 word proposals for your workshop presentation by Friday
8/24 to: marsha_orgeron@ncsu.edu, North Carolina State University, Dept.
of English, Box 8105, Raleigh NC 27695-8105.
