NEMLA, 6-9 March 2003: Boston, MA
Queering the Family: Reproduction in the 21st Century
The purpose of this panel is to bring together scholars whose work analyzes
representations of emerging 21st century reproductive practices in popular
culture. Particular attention will be paid to exploring the potential of
technologies such as egg donation, IVF, and cloning, and practices such as
surrogacy, open adoption, and gay parenting to "queer" the hegemonic
boundaries of the family. Participants will address a wide range of cultural
texts including science-fiction novels, films, television, and news articles
from the popular press in order to theorize the inter-relationships among
cultural representations, reproductive practices, and reconfigured families
of the future.
