"Violence and the Monstrous in the Pearl-Poems"
Violence and images of the monstrous are pervasive in the poems of MS =
Cotton Nero A.x-a beheading game, an eschatological flooding, a Green =
Knight, a transformed Nebuchadnezzar, and an enormous "fish," for =
example-yet their function within the four poems remains open for much =
debate. We are looking for papers that investigate the ways in which the =
poet utilizes violence and the monstrous in one or more of the four =
poems. We invite various theoretical approaches from scholars of all =
levels-from graduate student to senior academic.
Please submit a one-page abstract (and please include complete contact =
information).
Papers are to be no more than 20 minutes, and the deadline for =
submissions is September 15, 2002. Submissions and inquiries may be sent =
