CALL FOR PAPERS

Society of Early Americanists Conference
Providence, RI, 10-12 April, 2003

"Native American Literacies and Indigenous Textualities"

This panel will explore the diversity of Native American literary and =
cultural expression in the early Americas. Moving beyond an exclusive =
focus on Native American authors writing and publishing English-language =
texts, we seek papers on the following or related topics: indigenous =
languages and missionary translation efforts; treaties and negotiations; =
Indians as readers, orators, singers, and auditors; Native language =
liturgy; songs and hymns; codices, winter counts, textiles, carvings, =
and wampum belts. We especially welcome proposals which represent a =
geographical diversity of indigenous cultures in the Americas (including =
the Southeast, the Plains, the Southwest, Mexico and Central America) =
during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

By September 25, please send abstracts and one-page CVs to Joanna Brooks =
(brooks.j@mail.utexas.edu) or Hilary Wyss =
(wysshil@groupwise1.duc.auburn.edu).

Conference presenters must be or become members of the Society of Early =
Americanists (SEA). For more information on the SEA Conference 2003, see =
