CFP: Lesser Known Children’s Publications by Better Known American Women Writers (10/1/02; SSAWW 9/24-27/03)

The Second SSAWW International Conference; Renaissance Worthington Hotel; Fort Worth, TX, September 24-27, 2003.

In the ongoing recovery work of women’s writing, we are sometimes surprised to learn that American women writers whose works for adults are widely recognized, or even fairly well known, have also published stories, poems, or other works in periodicals or books for children. In other cases, works that are better known in adult audiences actually appeared previously or were later reprinted in children’s magazines or books. In most cases, the children’s works or publications have received relatively little attention compared to those for adults by these same authors. The purpose of this proposed panel is to focus attention on these lesser-known publications for child audiences. Papers are sought which expose and discuss under-recognized children’s works or publications from women authors whose reputations precede them as writers for adults. While the 19th century, in particular, enjoys a wealth of these that are underrecognized, writers and works may come from any period in American literature, including t
he present.

Topics for papers might include but are not limited to: loss and recovery histories; analyses of the children’s works; boundaries, real or imagined, between children’s and adult literature; original publication and reception issues; interplay among children’s and adults’ works by the same author; issues concerning labels such as "children's literature” vs. “mainstream,” etc. All topics related to the children’s publications and their authors better known for adult titles will be considered.

Please send 1-page proposals plus a short bio. copied and pasted inside an email message (no attachments, please) by October 1, 2002 to Connie Ann Kirk at: ckirk@mansfield.edu

Queries or expressions of interest are also welcome at the same e-mail address.

Panelists may have the opportunity to revise a portion of their work for publication in the illustrated, 3-volume _Encyclopedia of American Children’s and Young Adult Literature_, edited by Connie Ann Kirk forthcoming from Greenwood Press. In addition, papers and proposals may be considered for a proposed collection of essays specifically on this topic tentatively titled _Little Did We Know: Lesser Known Children’s Publications by Better Known American Women Writers_.
