RACE AND MATERIAL CULTURE. Abstracts invited for proposed panel at the
national conference of the American Studies Association, October 16-19,
2003 in Hartford, CT. The panel, to be chaired by Kirk Savage, will
feature innovative methods for analyzing race through material
objects. Possible subjects include (but are not limited to) monuments,
photography, housewares, furniture, clothing, quilts, toys, folk art,
theatrical scenery, tourist souvenirs, racist "collectibles," the
culture of eBay, etc. Please indicate clearly in your abstract the
method through which your paper will enable selected material objects
to speak about race. Send abstract and one-page c.v. by January 10,
