CFP: 19th C. Women Writings and Film (10/1/02; 9/24/03-9/27/03)

Proposals or papers are sought for a proposed SSAWW session on "Adapting
the Nineteenth Century to the Big Screen" (tentative title). This session
will look at films which have adapted the works of nineteenth century
American women either in their entirety or in part. Papers might focus on
the art of the adaptation and how it does or does not create reflexive
readings of the original text. Another area of interest might include
whether the gender of the writer/director of the film makes a difference
in the way the new text of the film reads. Does this literature resist
film? How important is the mise-en-scene to the adaptation? How does
cinematic time displace the narrative time of the original work? I'm just
brainstorming--all approaches are welcome.

If all goes well with composing the panel and participants agree, I plan
to try and arrange screenings of the films under discussion in the panel.
Further discussion will be forthcoming between the members of the panel
later on.

The Society for the Study of American Women Writers conference is
scheduled for September 24-27, 2003, in Fort Worth, Texas. SSAWW website:

The last conference was a wonderful place to get to know other scholars
working in women's literature. Folks were genial, and the level of
presentations was quite fine.

Please email me 1 page proposals by October 1, 2002. I welcome queries as
well.
