Marlowe and Orientalism.
Abstracts are invited for 20-minute papers to be presented at a proposed
session of the Fifth International Marlowe Conference, Cambridge
University, England, June 30--July 4, 2003.
Although Orientalism is generally understood as a late 18th & 19th
century phenomenon in the particular service of a colonial agenda, it is
evident that ideological constructions of the East also played a
significant role in the cultural productions of the early modern period.
This panel will address the extent to which Christopher Marlowe, in his
various Orientalist texts, was instrumental in shaping and remodulating
the paradigms by which England imagined the East. Possible topics, with
regard to early modern orientalism, could include but are not limited
to: the triangulations of Protestant, Catholic, and Islamic creeds;
transgressive and normative sexualities; nationalism; anti-semitism;
gender roles; proto-colonial ambitions.
