Bollywood Dreams: Imagining an Alternative Cosmopolitanism
We solicit papers that address the use of the Bollywood musical in cinema
produced in the West. Movies such as Moulin Rouge, Monsoon Wedding, Bend
it Like Beckham, Bhaji on the Beach use the Bollywood musical not as an
accessory but as a structuring narrative device. This panel asks whether
such uses of the musical in cinema produced in the West constitute acts of
cultural appropriation or does indeed the Bollywood musical offer fresh
narrative possibilities for imagining an alternate cosmopolitanism? Do the
fantastic and melodramatic elements of the Bollywood musical permit the
producers to challenge the hegemonic norms of Hollywood cinema ? thus
signaling their outsider status? How, in turn, does the metropolitan viewer
identify with these texts? Traditionally theorized as a form of national
cinema par excellnce, how does the Bollywood musical travel in the global
marketplace?
