Initial Call for Papers

Perfect Enjoyment: Women, Agency and Orgasms, 1660-2002

Papers are invited for an edited collection exploring women's participation
in the production, dissemination and consumption of sexually explicit
materials. The collection will take a multidisciplinary focus with a
strong emphasis on the historical-cultural contexts in which
representations of sex are circulated by and/or for women.

We encourage essays dealing with the multifarious ways in which women
engage with sex, sexuality, desire and pleasure across a broad historical
spectrum. Essays could focus on individual authors/producers/consumers,
specific cultural moments and media forms.

Topics might include but are not limited to:

--Sexuality and public and private spheres
--Pornography and political nonconformity.
--Sex, travel and tourism.
--Enlightenment productions of pornography.
--Female libertinism.
--Pornography and class-consciousness.
--Nineteenth-century lesbian erotica.
--Female masochism and sexual pleasure.
--Female readers/viewers.
--Technologies and porn.
--Intersections between high and low culture.
--Illicit texts and/or activities.
--Education.
--Medical manuals and advice.
--Sexual identities
--Legal interventions.
--Scholarly activities.
--Devices.
--Mass production and consumerism.
