Meeting on Stage: Cross-Cultural Encounter in Plays by American Women

How and why do American women playwrights stage cross-cultural encounters
in their works? In what ways might negotiations between cultural
identities informed by race, class, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality be
central to an American woman playwright's mission and aesthetic? How does
theater, as a performance medium, facilitate such encounters and
negotiations? The playwrights this panel addresses will reflect the
interests of the panelists. This panel aims to offer a timely look at the
ways in which women playwrights not only create a multicultural American
theatre but also explore what multiculturalism means.
