Call for Papers and Panel Participants
Slash and Fan Fiction
"What Might Be Going To Have Been:
Dark Myths and Legends"
March 19-23, 2003
Ft. Lauderdale Airport Hilton
Participants are being sought for panel discussions
and paper sessions on Slash and Fan Fiction for the
24th Annual International Conference on the Fantastic
in the Arts. The focus of ICFA 24 is on the darker
side of the fantastic, on the strange and horrific
elements of myths, legends, and fairy tales that creep
into science fiction and fantasy. For more

Possible topics for include comparative studies of
slash and fan fiction writers and communities,
interactions between writers and fandoms,
relationships between writers and their controlling
narrative, tensions between fanon and canon, tension
between fan fiction and corporate interests, tension
between fanfic divisions (slash, het, gen) and genres
(BSDM, darkfic, happyfic, AUs, etc.). Other topics
could address the role of the Internet in fan culture
and the the changing role of the zine.
Any fandoms based on fantasy, horror, or science
fiction books, television, film, comics, gaming,
anime, and manga are welcome, as are any papers on
fandoms that relate to the conference theme of the
dark fantastic.

Panel participants should send an e-mail containing
their current/working contact information (snailmail

their interest in fan fiction.
If you are interesting in submitting a paper,
proposals should include a 500-word abstract and
appropriate bibliography indicating the project's
scholarly or theoretical context. Be sure to include
