From feathered hats to fur coats, from lap dogs to caged or stuffed wild
creatures, animals mesmerized their human counterparts in the nineteenth
century. The panel "Sexy Beast" will investigate how and why human desires
were projected onto or ascribed to animals and even animal objects such as
furs and feathers. In the interdisciplinary spirit of the conference, I
hope to include papers on the panel that reflect the subjects of a variety
of fields and locations, including literature, painting, sculpture,
theatre, fashion, cartoons, anthropology, zoology, or other arenas.
Please note--the INCS conference format requires that participants submit
completed papers in late January to be placed on a protected web site. At
the conference itself, panelists present a brief overview of the paper, and
sessions are devoted to (usually lively) discussion.
Please send one-page abstracts to teresa-mangum@uiowa.edu by Friday,
September 26 both pasted into your email and as an attachment.
Thanks,
Teresa Mangum
