Panel Abstract: CFP: The Duality of Nature (11/1/02; SSAWW 9/24-27/03)

SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF AMERICAN WOMEN WRITERS CONFERENCE
Renaissance Worthington Hotel, Ft. Worth, TX, SEPT. 24-27, 2003

Panel: The Duality of Nature

This session will explore the dichotomous role of nature in the
works--journals, diaries, slave narratives, poetry, novels--of American
women writers, such as Cather, Chopin, Rowlandson, Bradstreet, Dickinson,
etc. Nature often offers a release from the oppressiveness of societal
constraints. Though at times threatening, it provides an escape from an
otherwise stifling existence. Its sensuousness and tumultuousness also
mirror the character's emotions. On the other hand, nature oppresses and
isolates, restricting rather than freeing. This dual role as liberator and
inhibitor appears, at times, within the same work. The panel invites papers
using a variety of critical approaches to analyze nature's dichotomous role.
Proposals may also focus on comparison/contrasts between two or more works
or authors.
