CALL FOR PAPERS: "AMERICAN STAGINGS OF THE BODY IN CRISIS"
A proposed panel for American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS)
Association for Theatre in Higher Education
31 July-3 August 2003; New York City
_____________
I invite papers interrogating representations of the body in crisis in
American drama and/or performance.
In her general Call for Papers, ATDS Conference Planner Sarah Stevenson asks
participants to consider, "What discoveries about past texts and practices
are integral to the future of American theatre? What current practices are
transforming the landscape of theatre and theatre studies in America?"
I would like to apply both these questions to framings of the body in
American theatre. In canonical drama, what has constituted physical crisis?
To what degrees of explicitness has it been rendered, to what social or
critical effects? How has it inflected dramaturgy? How is the besieged body
changing as American theatre absorbs new voices, new identities, new
dramaturgies?
Papers may address canonical texts, historical texts, recent texts,
unpublished performances. The field is wide open.
