The University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand invites participation
in the 2003 Fulbright American Studies Conference: 2-5 July 2003
"Is it the End of the American Century?".
The last decade of the twentieth century and the beginning of the new
century have been marked by changes in the literary, historical, cultural
and political landscape. The value of the "melting pot" must now be
weighed alongside the fragmentation of foreign states and the possibility
that the United States may, now, also be culturally and ethnically
fragmenting. Have we reached the end of the American Century?
This conference invites you to re-examine the literary, historical,
political and cultural interfaces that occur within the United States
and those that occur between the United States and the rest of the
world. The focus will be on (but not confined to) the period since the
end of the Cold War, 1989, to the present.
Papers examining changes that have taken place over a longer period are
also welcome, as are those that question whether change is, in fact,
occurring. Comparative American Studies papers are also welcome.
Proposals, drawing from any discipline, are invited on any aspect of the
topic. Abstracts of 250-300 words should be sent to
j.pilditch@waikato.ac.nz
