The Women and Theatre Program is seeking proposals for panels and
presentations at the 2003 ATHE/AATE Conference in New York City, July
31-Aug 3. This year, Women and Theatre plans to continue exploring the
theme of its pre-conference--Identities on Trial--throughout the ATHE/AATE
conference. As a result, we invite sessions that interrogate the current
state(s) of crisis on its many urgent fronts and/or historical moments of
upheaval, exploring theatre and performance as a means of
response. "Trial" is a layered term that includes the notion of ordeals
("trials and tribulations"), experimentation (a "trial run"), or legal
action ("trial by jury"). We invite papers and performances that explore
the multiple nuances of this concept: session topics could range from
transnational performances of "justice" to putting the canon of dramatic
literature "on trial" to historical performances of crisis. With the
ATHE/AATE theme of "Tomorrow's Stages: Blueprints for Transforming Theatre"
in mind, we especially welcome panels that explore the use of performance
as a "trial run" or blueprint for the transformation of identities.
We also plan to include sessions that are not specifically related to the
pre-conference theme but are aligned with the ATHE/AATE theme and issues of
"women and theatre," broadly defined. The description for the conference
reads, "In a city of diverse stages, AATE and ATHE invite you to transform
your theatrical dreams and imaginings into action. As New York City and
our nation continue to rebuild, discover how the theatre we teach and
perform reflects our nation's new reality." As you conceptualize your
session proposal, keep in mind that the New York Conference Committee
(NYCC) encourages titles with active verbs.
NYCC also encourages panel proposals that incorporate "innovative formats,
numerous voices, and active dialogue." In other words, you are strongly
encouraged to utilize panel configurations that go beyond the traditional
3-speaker panel presentation: consider alternative options such as
seminars, roundtables, performances, workshops, and poster sessions.
If you wish to propose a multidisciplinary session, which would be
sponsored by three ATHE focus groups, you send your proposal directly to
the ATHE conference committee at the ATHE office, as described on the
proposal form. If you are interested in coordinating a multidisciplinary
panel and you wish to name WTP as a sponsoring focus group, you are
strongly encouraged to contact Laura Edmondson, the WTP Conference Planner,
before sending your proposal to the conference committee. (Contact
information is listed below.)
ATHE will not accept proposals that indicate the presenters are still to be
determined. All persons whose names appear on proposals must have agreed
to attend the ATHE conference. In addition, priority will be given to
panels that include representatives from various institutions (rather than
all from the same university, for example). Potential presenters should not
apply to be on more than one WTP panel.
Individual paper proposals will be seriously considered, but preference is
given to complete panels. In the past, individuals have successfully
assembled complete panels through networking on the ATHECALL and/or WTP
listserv (See "Resources" on the ATHE webpage (www.hawaii.edu/athe) for
information on subscribing to the ATHECALL listserv.) If you are having
difficulty with assembling a complete panel, please contact Laura as soon
as possible.
Proposals must be submitted on the official ATHE 2001 "Conference
Session/Paper Proposal Form," which is available on ATHE's website (see
address above).
The proposals must be received by Thursday, November 1. Late proposals
will not be accepted; however, if your materials are incomplete, you will
have one week to resubmit. Please follow the guidelines listed on the
proposal form carefully: a number of proposals arrive within a short period
of time, and they must be processed by WTP quickly and then forwarded to
ATHE within a couple of weeks. If your proposal requires extra time to
process because of missing materials, you run the risk of not receiving the
full consideration the proposal deserves.
