The Academy and Maps of Knowledge: An Interdisciplinary Conference

The Graduate Students of English in conjunction with the Cultural,
Social and Political Thought (CSPT) Program and the Humanities Centre
will be hosting the 4th Annual English Graduate Students' Conference on
February 14 and 15th, 2003.

The Academy and Maps of Knowledge: An Interdisciplinary Conference will
build on the successes of the past three years, and focus on the
production of knowledge in relation to institutional and disciplinary
contexts. Proposals from graduate students working in disciplines other
than English are also encouraged.

We welcome proposals for 20-minute papers and panel proposals on the
following topics:

- professional postcolonialisms
- the history of truth (vs. knowledge)
- formation of epistemologies, established and new
- the history of books and libraries
- hegemony / counter-hegemony in the classroom and the academy
- disciplinary boundaries; is interdisciplinarity working?
- the globalization of the academy
- the culture of capital / the capital of culture
- the explosion of the canon
- the commodification of knowledge

One of our keynote speakers this year will be Dr. Masao Miyoshi from the
University of California, San Diego. Dr. Miyoshi is Hajime Mori
Professor of Japanese, English, and Comparative Literature; Cultural
Studies; Critical Theory; Modern Japanese Literature and Victorian
Literature. He is the author of several books including: The Culture of
Globalization (co-edited with Fredric Jameson) and Off Center: Power and
Culture Relations Between Japan and the United States. We are in the
process of confirming the second keynote speaker.

Proposal length: 500-700 words. Please send separate cover letter with

institution. Deadline for proposals: November 28, 2003. Please send
