Call for Papers for the International Sade Congress / Colloque International
Sade
Charleston, South Carolina, March 12-15, 2003
Panel Title: “Sade avec Lacan?”
Papers welcome, in either English or French, addressing psychoanalytic
approaches to the Marquis de Sade and in particular the relevance of
Lacanian psychoanalysis to the Sadeian oeuvre. The panel title is informed
by Jacques Lacan’s famous article “Kant avec Sade,” but the question mark in
“Sade avec Lacan?” is important. To what extent is psychoanalyzing
sexuality, or even theorizing sexuality, even possible? To what extent is
psychoanalysis, and theory in general, itself also sexual? To what extent
is Sade himself able to theorize sexuality in his own works, with or without
the aid of subsequent theorists like Lacan? In bringing philosophy into the
bedroom, does Sade rob philosophy of its eroticism, rob eroticism of its
philosophy, or perhaps even rob eroticism of its erotics? Submit paper
proposals via email (ACoykenda@emich.edu), fax (734-483-9744), or US Mail no
later than December 15, 2002 to the following address: Abby Coykendall,
Department of Language and Literature, Eastern Michigan University, 612
Pray-Harrold Hall, Ypsilanti, MI 48197.
