13th Annual Mardi Gras Graduate Conference
on Language and Literature
MEMORY IN LITERATUE
AND POPULAR CULTURE
February 27 -28, 2003
Sponsored by the Louisiana State University
English Graduate Student Association
Keynote Speaker
ERNEST GAINES
Award-winning novelist and short story writer
Ever think of an event and remember exactly where you were during its
occurrence? Of course you have. Think of the death of Princess Di, or the
O.J. Simpson craze. Where were you? What were you doing? Or the first
time you encountered a memorable Morrison or Faulkner character. This
conference theme asks participants to consider memory as historical
practice. We probe how memories come to ?matter,? and how the dynamics of
memory are implicated in literature and in popular culture. We welcome all
panel submissions. Some panels may include ?Southern Popular Culture and
Memory,? ?The Seductive Power of Film,? ?Autobiography, Memory, and
Culture,? ?Memory in the Southern Novel,? etc. A panel will be dedicated
to creative submissions. Potential areas/methods of investigation may
include but are not limited to:
· Memory in our classrooms
· The role of memory in film
· Memory and privilege
· The power(s) of memory
· Memory as social construction
· Memory and trauma
· Regionalism and memory
250-word abstracts and/or proposals for panels must be postmarked by
December 16, 2002, and should include: name of presenter, mailing address,
email address, telephone number (home and/or office), and title of
submission. Preferable, send abstracts within an email message. No
