Chicklit: A Study Day
22nd February 2003, Liverpool John Moores University, UK

Five years on from the worldwide publication of Helen Fielding's
_Bridget Jones's Diary_, the genre known as 'chicklit' has become a
publishing force to be reckoned with, and a mainstream cultural presence
to the extent that it can be declared in some quarters to be effectively
finished, while still dominating booksellers' shelves. The time is right
for researchers working in the fields of popular fiction and culture,
literary studies and cultural history to assess the significance of
chicklit. Papers assessing the impact of chicklit on late twentieth and
early twenty-first century culture are invited for this study day.

Possible topics include:

Chicklit and publishing trends
Media representations of the chicklit phenomenon
Chicklit's influence on non-fiction and visual media
Global perspectives on chicklit
Regionalism and/or London in chicklit
Consumption, shopping and fashion
Representations of sexuality
Austen and other antecedents: epistolary or confessional forms
Links with other popular fictions: Mills and Boon, rom-com
Chicklit's relation to 'ladlit'
Feminism and chicklit
Chicklit and the postmodern

Abstracts of c. 250 words should be sent to Joanne Knowles at
jo.knowles@blueyonder.co.uk or c/o the Association for Research in
Popular Fictions, School of Media, Critical and Creative Arts, Liverpool
John Moores University, St James Rd, Liverpool L1 7BR, UK.

Deadline for submissions: 1st December 2002
