Roundtable: Queen Lili'uokalani
Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW)
September 24-27, 2003
Fort Worth, Texas
In February 1898, six months prior to the U.S. annexation of the =
Hawaiian Islands, Queen Lili'uokalani published Hawaii's Story by =
Hawaii's Queen and thus emerged from the period's turmoil as a =
remarkable literary figure and a farsighted political strategist. A =
century later, scholarship on the Queen remains almost entirely on the =
biographical reference shelf. This roundtable discussion will address =
the challenges in researching and teaching the Queen's life and memoir. =
Related areas of discussion might include Queen Lili'uokalani's music =
and poetry, the prison quilt, juvenilia, material constructions (e.g., =
postcards and sheet music), turn-of-the-century U.S. imperial discourse, =
teaching strategies, and the Queen's political legacy. Additional topics =
and suggestions are welcome.
