"Criticism and Writing"
Submissions are now sought for the tenth issue of Variations, the
journal of literature of the University of Zurich, to appear in
summer 2003

Criticism and writing form a pair, of which criticism - as a comment
on, or even an assessment of literature - is often considered to be
of less value than writing. The critic is said to be a mere "shadow"
(Georges Blin), if not "parasite" (Henri Michaux) of the artist. Yet
this hierarchical order can hardly be maintained given that criticism
itself may turn into a source of inspiration for writing. In the
oeuvres of authors like Lessing, David Lodge, Wordsworth or Bonnefoy
writing and criticism interact. This may not only lead to an analysis
of another author's texts, but also help "to come to poetic terms"
with one's own writing, as the poet-critic Seamus Heaney states.
The ambiguity of the terms Criticism is due to the historical,
ideological and linguistic contexts in which they are used. In any
case, however, criticism has a metatextual character, as it is always
literature about literature. For issue number 10 of Variations, the
literary journal of the University of Zurich, we invite contributions
that approach the complex relationship between writing and criticism
from different angles and perspectives.

Contributions may be written in English, German, or French. The
deadline for the abstracts is 10 December 2002. Once your abstract
has been accepted, the article as such (25'000 characters max.) is
due on 8 March 2003.

If you would like to submit an article to this issue of Variations,
please send an abstract (half a page to a page) to the following
address:
