Representations of London in Literature
An Interdisciplinary Conference
The Department of English and Comparative Literature
Goldsmiths College, University of London
25th to 27th July 2003
Call for Papers
Following the success of the 2002 conference, we are pleased to announce
that the conference will again be held in 2003.
London is one of the world’s major cities with a long and rich literary
tradition reflecting both its diversity and significance as a commercial
centre.
Literary London aims to:
• Investigate the changing cultural and historical geography of London.
• Place literary texts in relation to their historical and social
context and to theoretical approaches to the study of place and
development of the metropolis.
• Consider the social, political and spiritual fears, hopes and
perceptions that have inspired representations of London.
• Trace different traditions of representing London.
• How the pluralism of London literature is reflected in London society.
Papers are invited from any period and genre of English literature about
or set in London. While the main focus of the conference will be on
literary texts, we actively encourage interdisciplinary contributions
relating film, architecture, geography, theories of urban space, etc.,
to literary representations of London. Papers from postgraduate students
are welcome for consideration.
Abstracts of 200 words for a 20 to 30 minute paper by 28th February 2003
to: contact@literarylondon.org or the postal address below.
Proposals for panels of three speakers by negotiation with the
organisers are also welcome.
Guest and plenary speakers to be announced.
