Most plenary speakers are now confirmed for this conference, including Len
Findlay, Isobel Findlay, Rahim Jaffer MLA, Norman Nawrocki, Raj Pannu MLA,
and Jerry Zaslove, among others. Deadlines for individual themes vary, but
general submission under the conference's overall CFP are accepted until
February 1, 2003 (see link above for this general CFP).

THEME:
Culture and the State in Africa
(DEADLINE December 31, 2002)

In May 2003, the University of Alberta will host a conference around the
theme "Culture and the State: Past, Present and future." Within this broader
framework, the theme "Culture and the State in Africa" intends to explore
the notions of culture, nation and state as they pertain specifically to
Africa -- both historically and in the present.

Papers are welcomed from all disciplines and could address the following or
other topics:

* Culture, nationhood and the African Diaspora
* Travel Writing and Identity
* Popular Culture
* Art, Architecture and Culture in Africa
* Colonialism, Postcolonialism and Identity
* Sexuality in Africa
* NEPAD and its ramifications for the future of culture and the state in
Africa
* AIDS/HIV and culture
* Film Studies
* Oral tradition in a "postcolonial" environment
* Media and Freedom of speech

Please send an abstract of no more than 300 words for a proposed paper of 20
minutes to be given in either English or French to the theme coordinator,
Peter Midgley.
Deadline: December 31, 2002.
