The rationale for this broad interdisciplinary inclusion is rooted in the
core conference goal: To encourage a new agenda for knowledge acquisition
and diffusion by promoting and encouraging the ability to build community
through cooperative scholarship.

The projects, portfolios, posters, and papers presented at CommUnion should
attempt to bridge the gap between two or more disciplines and exhibit an
understanding of the interdependent relationship between them.

All methodological approaches are welcome.

Items to be considered include reports of original research including case
studies, critical essays, posters, portfolio selections, panel discussion
proposals, multimedia projects, film/video/audio productions, short
performances, honors projects/theses, and consulting projects.
Non-traditional presentation formats are strongly encouraged.

Note: Panel discussions require a faculty sponsor/moderator and a statement
of purpose.

What is CommUnion?
CommUnion is the outgrowth of the annual academic conference and
knowledge-sharing symposium sponsored and hosted by the Beta Chapter of
Lambda Pi Eta at NC State University. Undergraduate and graduate students
come together for non-hierarchal interaction and peer-to-peer learning and
networking in a comfortable, supportive environment. Literally, CommUnion is
the juxtaposition of communication, community, and unity. Figuratively,
CommUnion is about transcending the barriers that are often constructed
between the academic disciplines as they compete with one another for
students, faculty, grant money, and prestige. CommUnion is about the
learning and sharing that happens when disciplines overlap and acknowledge
that, despite many of their inherent differences, they have many things in
common...including a love of scholarship and new knowledge.

The goal of this conference is to provide a non-competitive, non-hierarchal
environment where students of all ages and backgrounds can share their
passions and scholarship with one another. CommUnion is about expressing
yourself as an independent thinker. CommUnion is about intellectual freedom
and the rewards that such endeavors bring to those willing accept the
challenge.

Who can participate...and how?
Graduate and undergraduate students from all colleges and universities
across North Carolina (and the US) are invited to participate and to attend.
Faculty and interested members of the community are also encouraged to
attend the conference. Participation can take the form of submitting a
paper, performance piece, video/film/multimedia production, panel proposal
or poster.

What are the goals of CommUnion?
In a nutshell, the goals of CommUnion are to provide a unique atmosphere on
campus where students and faculty can engage one another as peers in an
egalitarian setting that fosters free inquiry and academic excellence.
CommUnion provides a chance for majors from different academic disciplines
to come together on common ground to explore the ways in which their areas
of interest and study overlap. CommUnion also provides students with a
chance to "get their feet wet" by experiencing the challenges and rewards of
presenting research or exhibiting films/multimedia/performance studies in a
dynamic, yet comfortable setting.

Proposals should translate into 15 minutes of presentation time (7-8 pages);
those interested in displaying posters or portfolio selections are asked to
write a brief explanation of their projects and to outline their
space/display needs. We will have space for fixed art installations,
performance pieces (including oratory, music, or other creative expressions)
and short films.

Interested participants should submit a title and abstract or project
description before March 21, 2003 to:
