"Geographical Imaginings in the Early Modern World."

A Call for Papers for the 2003 Midwest Modern Language Association

Convention in Chicago on November 7-9.

Recent work in cultural geography has made it increasingly apparent that
the way a country maps itself and its position in the world reveals more
about the dictates and assumptions of that particular culture than about
the "objective" concerns of cartography. This session will focus on ways in
which literary texts and material culture help illuminate the great shifts
in technology and popular understanding that came with the spread of the
so-called "new geography" during the Early Modern period. Send 250-word
abstract by February 28. Kimball Smith, English, 308 EPB, University of
Iowa, Iowa City, IA, 52242, dk-smith@uiowa.edu
