CALL FOR PAPERS

I am seeking papers for a proposed special session at the 2003 MLA Convention
in San Diego, CA.

"Rethinking Elizabeth Spencer"

Spencer is often read as a master of the short story and as a writer whose
focus on families and small communities places her within a conservative
tradition of Southern literature. How might we productively reconsider her
oeuvre? Papers that offer new, theoretically informed readings of her novels
or her stories set outside the South, or that re-examine her significance in
American and Southern literature, are particularly encouraged.

Send 1-2 page abstracts and brief vita by March 20, 2003 to thaddox@utk.edu.
