"Performing the Eighteenth-Century"
A Graduate Conference hosted by the Eighteenth-Century Symposium
at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
September 26-27, 2003
The Eighteenth-Century Symposium at the University of Michigan
welcomes proposals from all fields and disciplines on topics
related to performance and/or theatricality during the long
eighteenth-century, including but not limited to:
· Theatrical performance and theatre history
· National theatres, the theatre of nation, and cross-cultural
exchange
· Canon formation
· Conventions of performance
· Performing gender and sexuality; staging the body
· Textual materialism and the theatre of the book
· Performing culture in the public sphere
· Theatricality, spectacularity, and wonder
· Fame and infamy; hoaxes, frauds, and plagiaries
· Science and the theatre of authority
· "Mob" action, the street as performance space
· Music and performance
· Pedagogy as performance (we also encourage sample syllabi
for a special panel on pedagogy)
We especially welcome proposals that reflect the interdisciplinarity
of the conference. Conference participants should plan to precirculate
their papers, and accompanying presentations should be no longer
than 10 minutes in length. Proposals should be sent either
electronically or through the post. If submitting electronically,
please send your proposal as both an attachment and within the
body of the email. Proposals should be postmarked no later than
June 30, 2003. Please include your telephone number, fax number,
and email address; also indicate any anticipated audio-visual
