Call for Papers
Special Session, Modern Language Association
Dec. 27-30, 2003 San Diego, CA
30 years ago there was a wave of immigrants who came to Britain from
formerly colonized countries such as India and Jamaica. The children of
those immigrants, mostly born in the UK, are now adults finding themselves
in an awkward position: they were raised as British citizens, attended
British schools and speak with British voices but their parents often
expect them to remain loyal to the cultural traditions brought to the UK
from the "homeland." Sometimes, the mores of the two cultures are
opposition which creates a conflict for the children. This conflict is
articulated through a strong new genre in British fiction as these (adult)
children of the immigrants seek to explore their dualities and ultimately
create their own niche in British culture, creating a new British experience.
This panel will examine how this new genre is being created through
discussions of individual authors, explorations of cultural clashes and
queries into how this new 1st generation of Britons sees itself. 1-page
abstracts on any aspect of these areas to tanter@tarleton.edu.
