Culture and the State in Education
In May 2003 the University of Alberta will host a conference around the
theme of "Culture and the State: Past, Present and Future." Within this
context, questions surrounding education and education systems are an
obvious, though often overlooked, focus. In the negotiations between the
state(s) and culture(s), education systems function to reproduce and
propagate both. This theme fosters debate on the ways that culture and
state are intertwined in education, especially in curriculum, personal
classroom work, and the homogenizing potential for education.
Papers are welcomed from authors in all disciplines, including those who are
involved in education in either a practical or theoretical context. We seek
papers that creatively address any aspect of this topic and we would
specifically encourage an interdisciplinary focus. Authors may address any
of the various levels of education from Montessori and pre-school through
elementary and high school as well as college and university. We also
encourage practitioners to discuss their work in this context.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
* Socialization, media, and schools
* Education, State propaganda, and curriculum issues
* The Queer or heterosexist classroom
* Private institutions versus public institutions
* Assessment and State achievement tests
* The state of the child and childhood in the State
* Aboriginal education and/or the multicultural classroom
* Inner city schools and the questions of State funding
* Gender and single sex classrooms
* Gendered classrooms and curriculum
* Comparisons between national education systems
Please submit a proposal of approximately 300 words for papers of 20 minutes
by January 25, 2003. Send all submissions to the theme coordinator,
Alexandra Wood. Early submissions are encouraged and email submissions are
welcome.
