CFP: Captivity and Masculinity (1/20; ASA, 10/16-10/19/03)

I seek one paper to complete a panel to be proposed for the American
Studies Association annual conference, Hartford CT, October 16-19, 2003,
on American Indian captivity and masculinity. Critics of American
Indian captivity narratives have placed gender in the foreground of
analyses of the genre, yet most focus on white women=92s experiences of
captivity only. This panel asks how captivity narratives construct or
subvert categories of white masculinity and/or American manhood.
Especially welcome are papers that examine lesser known captivity texts
and contexts and those that apply new theoretical approaches to the
genre.

Please send a one page abstract and short c.v. via email to Janet Dean,
jdean@bryant.edu, by January 20, 2003.
