45th Annual M/MLA Convention November 7-9, 2003 Congress Plaza Hotel,
Chicago, Illinois
CFP: Special session at the Midwest Modern Language Association,
Chicago 2003; entitled: "Joseph Conrad and Psychoanalysis"
I seek papers that explore the historical and theoretical links
between Joseph Conrad and Psychoanalysis. How does Psychoanalysis help
us to read Conrad, and in what was does Conrad enlighten the emergence
and development of Psychoanalysis (Freud in particular)? Perhaps more
than any other major British Modernist, Conrad practiced narrative as
a kind of latent self-analysis and therapy; as a result his writings
illustrate so many symptomatic acts that seek to work through their
psycho-social contingencies. Ideally, the papers for this panel will
not only read Conrad from the position of Psychoanalysis, but will
also read Psychoanalysis from a Conradian aesthetic, with an eye
toward the ways in which we might better understand both.
