>From Periphery to Colony: Scottish Encounters with Empire
This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be held at the annual
meeting of the Canadian Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, which
will take place at the University of British Columbia (in Vancouver,
B.C.), from October 22-25th, 2003. The theme of the conference is
'Indigenes and Exoticism' For more information, visit

Felicity Nussbaum has pointed out that Scottish Enlightenment writers
were deeply involved in mapping out the relationship between empire,
sexual desire and civic virtue. A number of recent works have followed
up on this assertion, examining the relationship between Scotland and
empire, including works by Michael Fry, Martha Mclaren and Susan
Manning. These works open up fruitful areas of research regarding
Scottish engagement with indigenous cultures and exoticism which this
panel hopes to explore. Contributors are invited to submit 350-500
word abstracts about points of intersection between Scots, colonized
peoples and related ideas of the exotic throughout the long eighteenth
century. Papers could include (but need not be limited to) discussions
of : Scottish Enlightenment paradigms of empire; the representation
and historicization of 'exotic' cultures by Scottish writers (such as
James Macpherson, Tobias Smollett and others); Scottish interaction
with, and evaluation of, indigenes or exoticism; Scots as mediating
figures between the exotic and Britishness; or Scots as figures of
exoticism.
Abstracts should be sent to Sharon Alker at alker_at_interchange.ubc.ca
by March 25, 2003.
