(dis)junctions: morphing the written word (april 11-12, 2003)

Morphing Text: the electronic revival of the written word.

The 20th century declared, “Print is Dead.” The 21st century declares, “Long
live hypertext!” To be fair, George Landow declared “Long live hypertext,”
Espen Aarseth declared, “Long live cybertexts” and Lev Manovich declared
“Long live databases.” In any case, when the word became pixel, instantiated
in ones and zeroes, or even one of N. Katherine Hayles’ “flickering
signifiers,” it became a graphical element on the page in a way it had not
been since Gutenberg replaced the illuminating hand with the printing press.

We are looking for “electronic” works of art, Flash movies, animated .Gifs,
Shockwave shorts, etc. that morph the written word, transforming text into a
gestural signifier. These works will be presented along with a short
theoretical explanation and a demonstration by the
creators/fashioners/writers.
