(dis)junctions: morphing the written word (april 11-12, 2003)
Weapons of Mass Deception

The power of the spoken and written word has often been criticized due
to its inherent or potential for manipulation and a distortion of
“reality”. In the aftermath of September 11th, the term “terrorism”
has increasingly come to signify a particular portion of the global
population. What is “terrorism”? How can this term be evaluated in a
manner that does not vilify one section of society while absolving the
“terrorism” espoused by the opposing side? How does the mass media
propagate this mass deception of the public? How does subjective
reporting correlate with this conscious or unconscious tendency of
vilifying one party? Can steps be taken to correct this heavily
biased media machine without infringing on basic freedoms of speech
and the press?

One page abstracts should be e-mailed to: tinastavropoulos_at_yahoo.com
by February 14th, 2003 (text in the body of the message; please no
attachments). The submissions should be no longer than 250 words.
