Patriotism Reconsidered

With the emergence of the USA Patriot Act, the creation of the
Homeland Security force, increased airport and immigration profiling,
is it time to reconsider the links between “nationalism” and
“fundamentalism”? Given the seemingly blind patriotism espoused in
contemporary society, is this trend fostering a more violent approach
to life- nationally and internationally- which contradicts the essence
of democracy? Instead of seeing this as a new trend in political and
social life, an effective analysis could offer a comparative approach
to these issues in conjunction with an understanding and definition of
“democracy” in theory and practice. Ultimately, this panel seeks to
discuss the construction of individual and collective identity in the
contemporary nation-state.
