Conceptualizing Film and Photography in the Mechanical Age
This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be held at “(Dis)Junctions:
Morphing the Written Word” at the University of California Riverside’s 10th
Annual Humanities Conference on April 11-12, 2003.
Contributors are invited to submit papers on any aspect of twentieth century
film or photography including (but not limited to) the following topics:
-Modernism and Postmodern theory and its intersections with twentieth
century film and/or photography. Such interrogations can include discussions
surrounding Walter Benjamin’s seminal essay, “The Work of Art in the
Mechanical Age of Reproduction.”
-Exploration of the presence of film and/or photography in such literary
works by such authors as Italo Calvino, Julio Cortazar, Michel Tournier, or
other works that feature photography and film within the text.
-Critical investigations of adaptations of the book to film.
One page abstracts of 250 words should be emailed to

included in the body of the email; please no attachments. For more
