Call for Papers: "The Asian Body in Film and Visual
Culture" (2/14/03; 4/11/03-4/12/03)
This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be
held at
"(Dis)junctions: Morphing the Written Word," the
University
of California at Riverside's 10th Annual Humanities
Conference. It will take place April 11-12, 2003. For

information, visit www.geocities.com/disjunctions
The representation of the Asian body has been quite
troubling in American cinematic history. From the
hypersexualized Asian female body (Lucy Liu) to the
athletic yet non-sexualized body of the Martial Arts
hero (Jackie Chan), the site of the Asian body is one
that has been mythologized, demonized and eroticized.
We have to question how other Asian-Americans like
Margaret Cho complicate these paradigms of
representation. Can Asian bodies move beyond the
action film? Moreover, what effects does the
visibility of more Asians in seats of power, like John
Woo's or Ang Lee's directorial efforts, have upon the
popular perception of Asians? Lastly, where is the
Queer Asian body in film and visual culture? What is
the state of Asian/Asian-America in popular culture?
Contributors are invited to submit papers that examine
the representation of the Asian/Asian-American body in
Film and Visual Culture. Topics could address but are
not limited to:
-Martial Arts films
-Jet Li
-Jackie Chan
-Margaret Cho
-Theoretical perspectives on the politics of
representation
-Case studies of the career of a single actor or
director
-Textual analyses of films or television shows
-Questions of cultural appropriation
-The popularity of Asian themes or motifs in media
