"Textual Intercourse"

The aim of this conference is to investigate the metafictional
dimension of intertextuality by approaching the practice as an erotics of
writing (Ziegler) and of reading. Mating amorously and/or fighting to the
death (Bataille), two texts or more interpenetrate to/and sometimes
impregnate one another, live off and/or exhaust (Barth) one another in a
process of co-naissance (Jenny, co-birthing and knowledge). Such an analysis
will endeavour to bring into relief the dynamics of intertextuality while
laying stress on the reader's participation as well as his/her motives in
articulating the various intertexts together: is he/she allured by a
presence of texts withdrawing to disclose the figurality of an emerging text
while opening it up to a tantalising variety of senses, or is he/she lusting
after a hermeneutic jouissance (Barthes) derived from the texts' mutual
disfigurement? In order, therefore, to analyse intertextual writing and
reading as phenomenona in which different texts find or uncover one another,
papers bearing on such practices - among others - as rewriting,
encyclopaedic writing, borrowing and influence will be particularly welcome.
